FINALS FEVER!!!

17 teams, 7 months , 189 days, 1610 tries, 1394 goals and 9272 points later and we are here! Finals time

This year has been on of the closet seasons in recent record, we have seen upsets galore and so many games decided by 2 points or less. In fact a whopping 15% of games this year have been decided by 2 points or less, that is up 3% on last year when 12% of games where decided by 2 points or less and that is with additional games in the calendar as well.

More to excitedly there have been less blow outs, yes we have seen some big scores this year(74-0 anyone? eep!!!) however, this year we have seen 28% of games that have blown out and been decided by 20 points or more compare that to last year when we had a whopping 37% of regular season games which where decided by 20 points or more.

If I recall correctly there were even so called experts claiming that there wasn’t enough talent in Australia to support 17 or 18 teams, and some even called for the NRL to drop to 16 or even 12 teams!! LUDUCRIS!!!! We can obviously see how often those experts get around to the local rugby league venues to see the untapped, uncapped, game passionate potential running around every weekend.

Anyway I digress…….. The ladder after the regular seasons paints the picture, only 10 points separating 1st and 8th, you know what that means, a CRACKER OF A FINALS

Game 1 of the 2023 Finals sees the 2nd place Broncos take on the 3rd place Melbourne Storm and what a blockbuster it will be.

In a rinse and repeat of last weeks game at Suncorp Stadium, but oh what a difference a week makes and oh what a different game it will be. Both teams are back to full strength this week after last week saw over $5 Million worth of talent rested between the two teams.

The Broncos are out to gain some honor back as they look to break a 14 year hoodoo against Melbourne in Brisbane, and let’s not forget this the first finals game Brisbane have played since that dark day in 2019 when Parramatta wiped them out 58-0 starting a dreadful run that involved a wooden spoon for Brisbane. I’m sure as it would for any team the scars still remain, however this is a different Broncos team with just Carrigan, Haas, Flegler and Staggs the remaining members of that team ( and Oates but he is not playing) not to mention they have added premiership winning expertise Reynolds and Capewell, the electricity of Reece Walsh, and a new coach to boot.

Melbourne on the other hand are a picture of consistency as always. They have locked in their 8th top 4 finish in the last 10 years. Yes you read that right, the have finished outside the top 4 just twice in the last 10 years. They are also coming in on a hot streak winning there last 4 games of the season by an average margin of 21.7 points. Grant, Munster, and Hughes are all firing at the right time and the inclusion of Papenhuyzen makes for a frightening prospect.

Both teams have been ultra consistent this year, with just 2 losses separating them. In there last 5 games Brisbane have scored an average 33.4 points and conceded 16.8 points, while Melbourne have scored 32.2 points and conceded 18.8, with both teams 4-1 from their last 5 games. However the Broncos are a different team this year and based on the years efforts and in front of 50,000 I have the Broncos in front.

BRONCOS TO WIN

Match Number 2 sees us head to Bluebet Stadium for a Saturday afternoon special. Master v Apprentice, David vs Goliath and a foregone conclusion??????

The Penrith Panthers have ben ultra consistent again in 2023 claiming a 3rd straight minor premiership. Many had written them off this year, however it seems No Api, No Kikau, No worries for the Panthers! They have faced a lot this year with injuries at various times to Cleary, Luai, Edwards, Martin and Fisher Harris, plus as always an Origin exodus, yet they still managed to come through with their next man up mentality. Penrith come in with a 4-1 record from their last 5 games, however question marks remain did Parramatta show the rest of the league how to beat the Panthers? Have they given the blueprint to breaking a Dynasty?

The Warriors on the other hand are we witnessing the rise of new Dynasty? With an average squad age of 26 years old they are ripe for the picking. A new coach has bought new ideas and has rolled back the clock on veterans Shaun Johnson and Addin Fonua-Blake who have both proved invaluable leaders this year. Like Penrith they come into the finals off the back of a 4-1 record with a last start loss to the Dolphins when resting players their only blemish since round 18. This seasons Warriors have just found a will to win with 7 games won by 8 or less points. However with a Injury cloud over Johnson and a 45% win rate against fellow top 8 teams this year is it a bridge too far?

Every week one finals produces an upset and I’m going to make a big call and claim this is it! A lot has to go the way of the Warriors, however with a mobile, physical pack to match the Panthers, the passion of a nation deprived of their team for 3 years and a IF Johnson plays I sense they have the smarts to make it happen.

WARRIORS TO WIN

Sharks vs Roosters will cap off Saturday night football at Pointsbet Stadium. Both teams have had anything but spectacular seasons. With all due respect I am not expecting either team to set the world on fire this finals series.

The perennial Bridemaids the Sharks (in the finals but not the big dance once again), can they put the scars of last year to the side and the top 8 hoodoo and pull of a win in the 1st elimination final? It is no secret of the Sharks struggles against fellow top 8 teams the last 2 years and this season is no different. In 10 games this season against fellow top 8 teams they have won just 3, losing by a combined score of 258 – 162. Including losses by 54-10 vs Melbourne, 44-12 vs Warriors, 32-6 vs Knights and 28-0 vs Penrith. They have however beaten the Roosters in the one match they have played in 2023. Will it be enough though?

On the other hand the Roosters have seen a resurgence impressive enough the turn the doubters. They have not just broken down the door to the finals they have bashed it in off the back of a 5-0 run into the finals. Yes they had an favorable run with games against the Rabbitohs, Tigers, Dolphins, Sea Eagles and Parramatta (all teams outside the 8) but take nothing away, they won these games well. Tedesco is looking back to his best and Sam Walker has new found confidence since returning to first grade while Suaalii is proving dynamic since returning to the wing. Trent Robinson knows how to get a team up for the finals and I feel may have a sneaky ace up his sleeve.

This is probably the toughest of week 1 to predict. However I will have to go with the Sharks on this one. The Roosters are on a run however given the last few times they were really challenged they came up short losing to the Broncos and Storm respectively. While the Sharks have shown enough to get through week one and with this being Club Champion Wade Grahams last home game I think they will be up for the occasion.

SHARKS TO WIN

In this humble Arm Chair Commentators opinion this is the game of the round, and one I am most excited for. We round out the finals with cracker at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Every supporter who has a team outside the eight has the Knights as their Smokey to win the comp! Not since the Jarryd Hayne lead Eels side of 2009 have we seen a team with such an impressive run to the finals. 8 weeks ago this team was cooked and no one gave them a chance, enter Kalyn Ponga. Kalyn has been electric the last 2 months and almost single handedly carried this team on his back. Make no mistake for the Knights to be successful this series they NEED PONGA TO STAY FIT.

The Raiders on the other hand have gone the other way. Impressive mid season after a slow start to the year, winning 10 out of 12 games between rounds 6 and 19, with everyone elevating to potential grand finalists and it looked like ol Grumpy Ricky had done it again. Unfortunately the back end of the season has not been as impressive winning just 2 from their last 7 games with the bye in round 20 seemingly halting all momentum. If the Raiders are to fire a shot they will need all their big guns firing on all cylinders to send Wighton and Croker out a winner

Did the emotion of the Jack Wighton decision become too much of circus to overcome? As much as we would love to see Wighton and Croker go out winners this year, I think it is a bridge too big to climb and this is where their season 2023 ends. Kalyn and the Knights with a parochial Novocastrian crowd behind them, in the form that they are in a specials to win, and win in a canter.

KNIGHTS TO WIN

It is set to be a big series and one where I truly believe anything could happen. Who will take out the series? Will the Panthers go back to back to back? Can the Broncos knock them off their perch? Will the Knights pull off a run from outside the top 4? Or will something completely unpredictable knock all our socks off? I have no idea, but let me tell you I’m excited to find out 😉

Privileged eyes gone blind.

These are unprecedented and uncertain times. We have a worldwide virus flooding every market. All of a sudden things we took for granted such as grocery shopping, travelling, going to the movies and of course going to watch our favourite warriors battle it out of a footy field are now in jeopardy.

I for one am getting increasly frustrated in the last 48 hours at the whinging NRL players and commentators and their bias and vocal opinions. In fact one player Cameron Smith who I have taken a particular disliking to.

His belief is that the NRL should suspend all games for a month to protect the players and their families as they are often traveling in and out of airports and quote “After finishing these matches on weekends, we go back to our families. Craig [Bellamy] has an elderly mother. My parents are in their 60s, players aren’t concerned about themselves, they’re concerned about their families and making this issue which is already global, making it much bigger than what it is in Australia at the moment”

undefined

Well Cameron why are you so different from us? Why Mr Smith is your family any more important than mine? Or my sisters, my mates or anyone else in Australia for that matter?

Myself and my wife we are both contractually obligated by our employers to go into work, day in day out and face this thing head on and potentially face the risk of bringing it home to our kids, our elderly relatives and babies. However we still have daily tasks to attend, lives to live and duties to perform. My company doesn’t get to ban people from coming into our workplace to minimise risk. We don’t get to go behind closed doors and let people just view us selling a product on Skype or facetime in an empty store.

What about the postmen and women who still have to deliver our mail and packages, or the grocerie workers who have abuse hurled at them for not having enough hand sanitizer or the garbage men (You know all these people are those little people you usually thank up on stage) taking away our used products that they themselves don’t have time to collect.
We have to battle it out and take precautions advised to us. cause thats life in the real world away from the NRL bubble.

So why mate, why are you any different? Are you not contractually obligated to turn up by your employer the National Rugby League until such time as they deem not necessary? Are you not obligated like the rest of us to go out and make a living to provide? Or are you under the old school assumption of money still grows on trees and the NRL will keep on paying you a wage, even if your not willing to work?

The fact that you spoke out of school, out of turn and against your employers and without thinking of the little people that pay your wage speaks volumes for the selfish and arrogant attitude that you feel you are entitled to take in the twilight of your career. A attitude that quite frankly has run its course with me.

undefined

Yes this is a pandemic, that has been recognised. Yes this can and has spread like wildfire that has also been recognised. As yes rugby league and sport is not the be all and end all of life. However is is your job, and this like everything if you take the right precautions, take the right advice and be smart then you are doing everything you can to be healthy.

2020-03-12

Please Cameron take a page out of Tom Hanks book. An international superstar actor who as I write this has contracted this horrible virus and is currently quarantined on the Gold Coast.
Did you see that social media post of his about how he blamed Baz Luhrmann (director) and the movie studio his employer’s for making him travel internationally, to be here in Australia and in and out of airports travelling for the movie? No? what about the one complaining about how his wife, his family also contracted the virus because of their movements? No? Not that one either? That’s because he has respect. Respect for his fans, his employers, and everyone.  Not to mention the faith in the GC hospital staff trusted with his recovery. Because he knows this was his job that bought him here and regardless of what was going on in the world he still had a job to do and got on with the job at hand. You could learn alot about humility from this man.

By all means should one, two, five or twenty people test positive shut it down. Please people do not think I am making light of this situation. I know in your JOB you are wrestling people, and you are in close contact and sweaty and breathing on each other. Should that worst case scenario happen and lets all touch wood that it never does, then like everyone else who has contracted the virus, you WILL be quarantined and away from your family where they will be safe. So please trust in those process and live your life like the rest of us.

The NRL may very well decide to suspend rounds soon, or maybe even cancel the season who knows? until that day comes Mr Smith shut ya mouth, trust your employers are doing everything in the best interests of both the NRL as a business, and you and your peers as players, go to work like the rest of us, stop whingeing and DO YOUR JOB.

WONDER WOMEN

Current world number ones, dual sports stars, undefeated teams. Just some of the minor feats of our strong, often forgotten, Wonder Women of Australian sport.

Have you ever been to a live women’s sporting event? It is magical and alluring. Last year during the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, I went and watched the women’s rugby 7’s and it was by far one of the most thrilling and entertaining events I have ever been to; and I’ve been to packed house State of Origins and World Cup sporting matches. The physicality, the speed, the skill of the women before us was incredible. You could feel what it meant to them to be out there, those women loved every minute of it.

This makes me beg the question, why can’t we watch these girls on TV on a week to week basis? Ok I hear what you’re saying, women’s sport is not mainstream enough yet to warrant the coverage. Well guess what? Back in 1976 neither was cricket. Enter a man by the name of Kerry Packer and a little thing called World Series Cricket. Kerry took a punt and bought cricket into the new world. He created a market for something that wasn’t there, he gave people a product to watch and didn’t just stick it away on some 2nd or 3rd channel like 9 GEM. It got the full focus of the network. The rest as they say is history. So who will be this generations Kerry Packer? Someone take that punt.

Let’s for a moment take a look around the grounds. Ash Barty is the current world number 1 tennis player. What a feat that is and she did it without fan fare, without the headlines, without the remarkable ‘used to be a brat’ full turnaround. It has been a long time since anyone in Australia has been able to achieve this feat – just remarkable. Sam Kerr, the current Australian women’s soccer captain is one of the most dominant Australian Sports stars on the international stage currently. She is also a former Asian women’s footballer of the year winner and two time winner of ESPN’s Best International Women’s player award. Not to mention a recent 4 goal haul in one match at the recent women’s world cup. Just remarkable.

Ash Barty

In fact it is feats like these that make our current crop of international women sports stars dominant over our men. In almost every category our wonder women are leaving our men for dust. Basketball, soccer, cricket, even surfing. Last season in fact the Broncos NRLW team went through he season undefeated! When was the last time a team did that? What about the women’s state of origin at North Sydney oval this year? It was amazing!

Australian Womens v Mens current world rankings.

Elise Perry arguably the world’s most premier cricket player in the world at the moment bar none. She used to actually be a dual code international. Cricket for 6 months, soccer the other 6. Both at international level. This alone is a winning argument for the commitment and love of sport. A valid reason why women’s sport should be professional. Not Semi-professional. I don’t know what drives women to work harder or try to put on a strong show. Is it the fact they are underestimated? What ever it is bottle it up and distribute it to all of Australia.

With all the headlines in Australian sport in the last 12 months from tennis brats, to big head league players, to questionable social media posts and gambling on yourself and your team a case could be argued that these are the multimillionaire sporting icons we need right now. Watch out to the spoilt brats of the sporting world is all I can say.

All my points above bring me back to my earlier question. Who will be this generations Kerry Packer? Yes women’s sport is not currently ‘mainstream’ enough to earn the big dollars, (remember neither was cricket) however it would only take persistence, exposure and patience and we can change that. I for one look forward to the day I can come home from work, blow the froth off a cold one, chuck on the TV and roll from the NRL to the W League, to the Ashes, to the netball or baseball and women’s basketball all on mainstream channels and watching the superstars of every sport and every gender earning their $1m salaries together.

Crossroad Titans

Gold Coast Titans aka Trouble Titans aka Brisbane Titans aka No show Titans.

What ever you wanna call them the Titans are in no doubt at a cross roads in their tenure. From a young age being involved in Rugby League (ironically on the Gold Coast where it all began), we were always told “If you always do what you’ve always done, then you’ll always get what you always got” and “Adapt or die”. Now that last one was in reference to a game plan but the adage applies to my point all the same. How has this happened? Let’s break it down shall we:

I believe the troubles started with Michael Searle, when the Titans were born he was the CEO had no board to answer to. He was a founder, the judge, the jury and the executioner. Above all he ultimately and largely was held unaccountable. John Cartwright the noble good guy and inaugural head coach. Don’t get me wrong John and the team had some early success including in 2009 and 2010 when they finished 2 straight years in the top 4. Then comes the daunting reality, over the next 2 years they would win 16 games in 2 years – including the 2011 wooden spoon – they were doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Because of John’s relationship with Searle and the sentiment of being the inaugural coach he was probably held onto 2 years too long and eventually removed in 2014. The powers to be in the early days choose to focus on the Titans as a business and not the Titans as a football brand. Building a multi million dollar Centre Of Excellence eye sore and public bars in Surfers Paradise where was the football focus? Remember the Titans circa 2007? They were largely already an ageing team coming in. Preston Campbell, Scott Prince, Mat Rogers, Mark Minichello, Luke Bailey. All fantastic players in their own right but all in the twilight or later stages of their careers they were never 10 year players. The succession plan wasn’t there. When the legends retired there were little options to replace them. For example when Cooper Cronk left Melbourne they had Cameron Munster, when Stacey Jones retired the Warriors had Shaun Johnson, and when Michael Hancock went to England the Broncos had Lote Tuqiri. They all had one eye on the future with the exception largely of Kevin Gordon and David Mead the Titans were slim on talent but where are they today? Not with the Titans. No real planning no major prospects. With the Gold Coast being such a high participation rate on the GC that is a hard pill to swallow.

Then comes along Neil Henry. A very nice man also and with some experience to boot. However was he the right man to lead the club? History says no. I think given his history at Canberra and Cowboys, Neil had big immediate expectations placed on him. Pressure anyone would find hard to deliver on. To be fair Neil has a great head for footy but he was given a $1m player he didn’t need or want and was told to like it. Jarryd Hayne sent the club backwards we all know that and Henry wasn’t the coach to handle his ego. Let me ask you, If Bellemy or Bennett or Hasler were in charge of the Titans at that time do you think Hayne would have been able to run amok like he did? Didn’t think so. The clubs board ultimately backed a player over their coach that was trying to build something and ended up losing a good coach. As time shows the player after destroying a coaches career walked from the team anyway. In the end ultimately a lack of demanded respect and leadership from his players were Henry’s downfall.

Cue the Titans 3rd coach overall. The ultimate nice guy Garth Brennan. Again the Titans went for a largely untested man as head coach. Brennan had the runs on the board at reserve grade level but even back then I thought someone who had not coached before was maybe not the right fit for the job. They needed someone with discipline and who not be worried about critics, newspapers, being liked. You know like Bennett or Bellemy. Proof however is in the pudding and there is no doubting Garth’s ability however with a result of just 12 wins in 2 years makes it hard to justify. The unit is largely out of sync. They were paying players on potential, the game plan was at times above the players before them, they lack fight and an identity in the way they played, there is no Titans football and I believe as nice as Ryan James is they lack real leaders in the club. Someone in mould of James Graham or Sam Burgess someone that when the game is on the line or the team is in a slump will stand up and say ‘come on lads, back to basics, back to our game plan we are better than this’. They were also fast become the Gold Coast Panthers home to the Penrith unloved and unwanted. I get that is were Garth built his rep and had success with those players but Penrith is not Gold Coast. The football style is different, the fans are different and ultimately his recruitment strategy was a big loss in his favour.

So where to now? The Titans are at a cross roads. Do they continue to be the definition of insanity and do the same thing they have always done and expect different results? Or will the introduction this year of Mal Meninga bring about a QLD like re build from the ground up. I think the Titans need to look no further then the Brisbane Lions, what they have done and been able to achieve. They were at the same point a few years ago, they decided they had little choice but to change it up, re write the book for under performing teams if you will . They changed the way they recruited, they were getting an exodus of ‘homesick’ stars up and walk out on the club back to Melbourne or Adelaide or Perth. So they bucked the trend and started recruiting country boys or guys that were boarders and used to being away from home. They recruited mates that had played together before or knew each other from their youth or youth teams. This helped create a better vibe and unity and ultimately better culture.

They re-signed players on performance and players that wanted to be at the club not just the next big thing, paying on potential or someone who was collecting a pay check – anyone else was shown the front door. The philosophy was simple, if you don’t want to be here, then don’t. They got in a coach with a back bone and a proven pedigree for the game and had been in and around successful set ups. Not just the next former favourite son to roll off the production line like Voss or Leppitich.

Ultimately and above all now the Lions again have an identity in how they play their game, they play Lion football. Not just doing what everyone does cause it apparently works in Sydney or Melbourne. They are the Brisbane Lions and everyone, the opposition and fans know it. They made the tough calls and now they are not only destined for the finals but it seems a top 4 finish. Titans take a look, read the manual and drink their potion that is what you need to do.

There has been a lot said about who will bring the Titans back into the frame and drive success. Many names have been thrown up. Craig Fitzgibbon, Kevin Walters, The Walker brothers, Justin Holbrook. There are 2 names that aren’t mentioned above. Two names that can turn the club around. Mr Tim Sheens and my personal choice Mr Geoff Toovey.

Sheens and Toovey are old school rugby league men. Discipline, a take no prisoners attitude and an attitude for winning. They demand respect from their players and would not allow the wishy washy attitude toward the club and the game that the current Titans players have. The take a pay check attitude of players would go out the window, and they would single handedly attract rookie players and big name players alike. They are coaches that players want to play for and want to win for. They also have the runs on the board in terms of results. Sheens has won 4 premierships with 2 clubs (that’s second only to Wayne Bennett), he has coached Origin and International teams winning the 2013 World Cup and been named Dally M coach of the year on 3 occasions, While Toovey has yet to win a premiership, in 4 years he coached Manly to the finals on 3 occasions including a GF. He oversaw a changing of the guard at Manly and demanded success. Either men are perfect for the role. These men combined with Mal Meninga will have the Titans running to the beat of a different drum in 24 months. Hungry and hunting for success.

Getting the right coach in is step 1, changing the way of thinking is step 2. Did you know that the Gold Coast Titans don’t sign any players to contracts before the age of 16 years old. While this can be seen as admirable, in a world where talented players are getting snapped up at 13 and 14 years old can the Titans continue to take the high ground? In the current comp alone Payne Haas, David Fifita, Tom Deardon and Xavier Coates are all Gold Coast developed and all currently tearing it up for BRISBANE BRONCOS!! Not to mention Jai Arrow and Jarrad Wallace yes they are back at the Gold Coast now but both moved off the Gold Coast and had to be bought back at a higher price. Not good. Mal this is need number one to change.

I coach a junior Rugby League team on the Gold Coast. Each and every week I watch the talent of players that are running around on the Gold Coast. An epic nursery of talent from big front rowers to speedy and crafty little men. The Titans future. Make it happen Mal.

I believe ultimately there are good times on the horizon at the Titans and with the right people in place and the right decisions made we will see a big turn around. I for one am looking forward in 2 years time to once again be sitting in a packed house at Skilled Park with the Titans on the rise and the passion in the stands. Good times are coming. Let’s just make sure the right moves are made.
